What is Medicare Supplement Insurance?
Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap, is private health insurance that helps supplement Original Medicare. Once Medicare pays its share of the covered health care costs, then the Medigap policy pays the portion of what Medicare doesn’t cover. Each plan is standardized by state and federal laws with premiums varying by each state and carrier. Plus, there are multiple plan options based on your budget and coverage needs.
Am I eligible for Medicare Supplement Insurance?
If you are age 65 or older and have Medicare Part A and B, or have a qualifying disability, then you’re most likely eligible to purchase a Medigap policy.
When can I sign up for a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan?
The open enrollment period for purchasing a Medicare Supplement Insurance policy is six months from the first day of the month you turn age 65, or within six months of signing up for Medicare Part B. If you sign up during this period, you can’t get denied coverage or be required to pay more for your policy based on your health. If you sign up for a plan outside of this window, then you may have to go through medical underwriting. A plan representative can provide more specifics once they get familiar with your situation.
